5 Charlotte airport projects to watch

If Charlotte Douglas International Airport feels like a perpetual construction zone, that’s because there are several big projects ongoing to modernize the facility — and to accommodate the millions of passengers who travel through every year.

Why it matters: Charlotte’s airport is among the top 10 busiest in the world. It isn’t just rebounding from the pandemic slump in traffic anymore. It’s smashing pre-pandemic records.

By the numbers: Charlotte’s airport expects to exceed 60 million passengers either by the end of the calendar year or the spring of the following year, airport CEO Haley Gentry tells Axios.

A record 53.4 million passengers traveled through CLT in 2023, breaking the previous record of 50.2 million set in 2019, per airport officials.
The big picture: Charlotte’s airport reflects the city as a whole — rapidly growing, with construction around every corner.

Here are five airport projects and features to keep an eye on this year:

1. Airport overlook
A new airport overlook off Marshall Drive is on track to open this summer, and it will be very different from previous versions, Gentry tells Axios.

The new overlook will include two playgrounds, space for food trucks, covered and uncovered picnic tables, parking for cars, bikes and buses, plus exhibits.
“It’s a great free activity for families to enjoy,” Gentry says.

The overlook area will also include a USAir Flight 1016 memorial. 37 of the 57 people onboard the Columbia, S.C. to Charlotte flight died when the plane crashed into a Charlotte neighborhood in 1994.

2. Delta Sky Club
Delta Sky Club will open its first Charlotte location later this year. The nearly 15,000-square-foot space will seat more than 250 people. The exact location of the lounge at CLT has not been shared.

Access details can be found here.
Check out our CLT lounge guide

3.Sky bridges
The sky bridges, which will connect the hourly deck to the terminal, are scheduled to be completed this summer, per the airport.

4. Concourse A expansion
Concourse A phase II expansion will open this fall, adding 10 new gates, which will primarily be used by Delta. The 191,848-square-foot expansion costs roughly $231 million. It will include:

-Auto-tinting window glass to help control the temperature and sunlight inside the concourse.
-Seats equipped with charging capabilities.
-Two new artworks.
-Two open bars and a restaurant.
-Restrooms.

“We’re already talking about ‘where do our next gates come from? How do we accommodate the growth?'” Gentry tells Axios.

5. New direct flights
American Airlines recently launched a new daily direct flight from Charlotte to Tulum, Mexico.

Frontier will add eight direct flights from Charlotte this spring: New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Baltimore, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Houston, Buffalo, San Juan and Cincinnati.

American will also launch a nonstop flight to Vancouver, British Columbia starting June 5. Spirit will add a direct flight to Houston that day, too.
American will add seasonal nonstop service from June through early September for Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Bozeman, Montana: Calgary, Canada; and Spokane, Washington.

Radiant Revamp: 5 Trending Statement Lights for Every Kind of Kitchen

Kitchen design and lighting have come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of the singular choice between overhead fluorescent lights or Tuscany-inspired lampshades.

Nowadays, there’s a unique statement fixture for every kind of kitchen—from farmhouse to industrial to minimalist and more.

The best part about upgrading your kitchen lights is that it can be a standalone change (no renovation required) that immediately transforms the space from utilitarian to unique.

Looking for fixtures to tie your decor together and light the way for future gatherings? Here are five of our top picks for trending lights from Instagram to help inform your next kitchen upgrade.

1. Dish lantern pendant
One of our favorite statement lights for a rustic or industrial-style kitchen is the dish lantern pendant, like these from @verandaestatehomes.

“Lantern pendants are great statement pieces for kitchen islands,” says designer Meggan Fadden Wynja, of the Color Cord Company. “This grounds the kitchen island and creates balance. The dish-shaped diffuser softens the look by adding a natural element and providing a glow below with bright indirect light above.”

Get the look: Get your industrial kitchen light glowing with this alabaster bowl pendant.

2. Twin lamp shade sconces
If your farmhouse kitchen needs ambiance lighting (think: glowy evenings and soft mornings), look no further than these twin lantern sconces from @novelinteriors.

“These are classics for a reason,” says Wynja. “They finish off a space nicely while providing the perfect amount of light—which will vary based on the shade’s material. Fabric or glass provides the best luminance, but the trend of wicker shades adds a wonderful natural element.”

Get the look: Add a dash of upscale glam to your farmhouse with a few of these Sussex shade sconces.

3. Vintage amber glass pendants
Another understated but powerful statement light we love? These gorgeous vintage amber pendants and the way they look in this “cottagecore” kitchen from @devolkitchens.

“These vintage amber glass pendants captivate with their warm, inviting glow, reminiscent of candlelight,” says designer Guillaume Drew, founder of Or & Zon. “Their popularity is due in part to the nostalgic atmosphere they create, which complements the current trend of blending modern and vintage elements in interior design.”

Get the look: Create a nostalgic vibe in your space by shopping this collection of amber glass pendants on Etsy.

Carolina Hurricanes

Hurricanes 5, Islanders 3

The Carolina Hurricanes overcame a 3 goal deficit and defeated the New York Islanders, 5-3 to take a 2-0 lead in their playoff series.

The Canes dominated possession time and total shots taken but could not light the lamp until midway through the second period. After that, it was almost all Carolina.

The Hurricanes took 110 total shots compared to 28 for New York. They managed 39 shots on goal, had 39 shots blocked, and missed the net 32 times.

The home team had 13 shots on goal in the decisive third period compared to one for the visitors.

After falling behind 3-0, Teuvo Teravainen scored the first of five straight off a nifty pass by Jake Guentzel on the powerplay.

Seth Jarvis made it 3-2 when he scored with just over nine minutes left in the third. At this point, it seemed like Carolina was on a continual powerplay because they held the puck in the New York zone for minutes at a time.

Brind’Amour called timeout and pulled Andersen from goal with about three minutes left in the game. Shortly after, Andrei Svechnikov found Sebastian Aho at the side of the net and Aho tipped it in much to the delight of a delirious crowd.

With the score tied at three, Jordan Martinook stole the puck behind the net and sent it to the net for the game-winner.

The goal was just nine seconds after the Aho goal.

The Islanders were definitely shell-shocked and were frustrated as they started with some late hits and cheap shots to close it out.

They took exception to Jake Guentzel’s empty netter and things got worse from there.

By time the final horn went off, they were called for six misconducts in the last minute. Carolina had three of their own, including one by Guentzel, who got one for mouthing off apparently.

The Islanders had never blown a three goal lead previously in their playoff history, (81-0).

Game three in New York on Thursday night should be interesting.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers select a versatile defensive back, Chau Smith-Wade, at No. 157 overall

CHARLOTTE—The Carolina Panthers selected Chau Smith-Wade, corner from Washington State, with the 157th pick overall in the 2024 NFL draft. The pick is a result of a trade with the New York Jets on Friday.

Smith-Wade played four years at Washington State, really coming on in his final two years. His junior year, he started all 13 games and was an Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 after leading the Cougars with eight pass break-up’s and tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles.

His senior season was shortened due to injury. In the first seven games, which he did play, Smith-Wade had 36 tackles, two for loss, and six pass break-ups. While he played outside corner in college, the Denver native says coaches and scouts around the league have expressed the belief he’d be best served at nickel in the NFL.

“I suppose I am small at corner, you know, given the height range there, but if I go in the league playing predominantly nickel, I’m the right size,” said Smith-Wade, who is 5’10”, 185 pounds, Saturday afternoon, before expanding on why he feels he could thrive there. “The talents that I do have from an a athletic standpoint, my quickness, my will to improve and able to see different patterns and route concepts.”

The Panthers were hoping to add some corner depth in the draft, after putting attention to other positions in free agency, and trading Donte Jackson to the Pittsburgh Steelers (as part of the Diontae Johnson trade). Smith-Wade’s rookie season will primarily be spent as a reserve behind Jaycee Horn, Dane Jackson and Troy Hill (who is set to play nickel).

Even though Smith-Wade hasn’t played nickel competatively yet, the idea of being closer to the ball is one he’s looking forward to.

“At nickel you’re never cold, you’re either in the run fit, you’re in the box or you’re guarding those quick guys in the slot, so you’re never cold at nickel,” he said.

“I really love that about nickel and the defensive back variety pack, out of the corners and safety, just being that nickel, you’re closer to the ball.”

The best eco-friendly home improvements you can do for less than $100

Chances are at some point in your life you’ve heard the phrase, home is where the heart is. There’s a reason that’s said so often. Becoming a homeowner is emotional.

What if you had only $100 to invest in a cheaper, cleaner home? Or $10? Or even just $1?

The conversation about cutting your emissions is often about replacing big-ticket items like stoves, furnaces and cars. But millions of people are neither ready nor able to spend thousands of dollars. What if you didn’t need to?

I asked energy experts, efficiency engineers and readers about how to get the biggest climate bang for your buck, whether you rent or own your home. I wanted investments that turned a few dollars into a fistful of them, while cutting emissions within a few months or sooner.

I was not disappointed. There’s money just lying around your house squirreled away in floor joists, behind air ducts and even under the bedspread. You just need to know where to look. I’ve catalogued the best ideas to invest in the climate — and your comfort — by price, from $100 down to zero. And I’m sure there are many more. Send me your best at climatecoach@washpost.com.

Here are 10 improvements you can make for under $100:

Install storm windows
Return to menu
Cost: Starts around $80 per window.

Why it works: Millions of homes still have inefficient, single-pane windows. Replacing them with double-paned windows is cost-effective — but pricey, as much as $1,000 each to buy and install. Storm windows let you achieve similar results at one-third the cost.

Storm windows are aluminum frames with high-efficiency coated glass that permanently fit over your existing windows, either inside or outside, and blend in with your home’s existing architecture. They can be fixed or slide over your window so you can open and close them. They can save you 10 to 30 percent in heating and cooling costs, says Christian Kaltreider, a researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), one of the Energy Department’s research centers. This can deliver $100 to $300 in annual savings.

Push your lawn mower
Return to menu
Cost: Starts around $70.

Why it works: Stuck cutting grass behind a belching engine? First, plant a tidy wildland — a mostly natural yard with only a small area of grass you have to mow. Next, try a push reel mower. Lauren, a Climate Coach reader, bought hers for $70 in 2017, and hasn’t spent a dime since.

“Every time I use it I think to myself, ‘If only more people knew how great these things are!’” she wrote. “It is great exercise and takes care of the lawn without using any fuel. My kids and all of the neighborhood kids LOVE using it. … It does the job!”

I was hard-pressed to find one on Google Shopping that didn’t have four- or five-star reviews.

Have an attic? Pitch a tent
Return to menu
Cost: $60 to $150.

Why it works: The simple devices are usually made of nylon, insulation and Velcro, and fit over the attic opening. They cover the drafty space created by a poorly sealed ceiling access to your attic, usually with stairs.

Every time your heating or cooling system turns on, you’re pushing pressurized air out of your home. If there’s a gap where your stairs enter the attic, air will rush out there. A simple insulation cover cuts heat loss dramatically by stopping leaks, while keeping out insulation and dust particles that might drift down.

The 6 Hottest Outdoor Design Trends You’ll See Everywhere This Spring and Summer

One of the most hotly debated issues of our era is easily daylight savings time—and it’s upon us once again.

The clocks are doing their bi-annual switcharoo, going into “spring forward” mode on Sunday, Mar. 10, at 2 a.m.

Love it or hate it, an extra hour of sunlight is coming our way. So, instead of arguing about the topic, let’s dream about how that extra hour of light will enhance our outdoor living and plan a new look or backyard spruce-up.

To help pump up your style, we dug deep to come up with the latest and greatest trends for your deck, patio, and yard.

Read on for design ideas and accessory tips from the pros and industry analysts to level up your yard and lawn life so you’re sitting pretty this spring and summer.

  1. Tricked-out kitchens
Entertaining alfresco will never go out of style, meaning outdoor kitchens are here to stay. But the trend in 2024 is to go bigger and better in this space, with homeowners moving beyond a simple grill setup and spending more on bells and whistles to make it fancy.

“Summer kitchens are getting tricked out with more luxury appliances and specialty items like pizza ovens,” reports Pamela O’Brien, principal designer at Pamela Hope Designs. “Homeowners are adding more counter space outdoors, too, to help manage the increased level of cooking they’re doing in the backyard.”

  1. Navy blue and forest green
Looking to nature for a color scheme (think green, orange, yellow, and blue) on your patio or deck makes perfect sense—and it’s also on trend in the new year.

Ariel Barrionuevo, designer and manager at La Coralina Island House, recommends these shades when designing an outdoor look and predicts they’ll continue to find favor with homeowners.

“Try these colors when you select comfortable seating in weather-resistant fabrics, or get the blue and green look in an outdoor rug with a geometric pattern,” he says.

Your goal: an outdoor design that’s a stylish extension of your home inside.

  1. Petite spaces
The clever folks at Houzz, the online design and decorating site, have been working hard to determine the hot trends in 2024—and one of them is relatively diminutive in size.

Yup, tiny patios, small screened porches, and other cozy outdoor gathering spots are all gaining attention as we head into warmer weather, reports Annie Thornton, a Houzz outdoor expert.

Based on search data on its site, the Houzz Outdoor Home Design Predictions have pinpointed a rising interest in designing petite spaces outside, whether it’s a porch or patio.

To achieve the look, some homeowners are installing small decks near an entryway or an unused side yard, while those with more room to work with are adding secondary seating areas that are more secluded and located away from the house.

  1. American barn stars
According to lore, having a large star on your barn protected you from bad luck.

Noel Fahden Briceño, vice president of merchandising at Chairish, notes that the American barn star is back as a trend in 2024, partly because folks are “always on the lookout for the most chic, unique, and eclectic pieces.”

Bring the barn star idea to your backyard with a simple metal design attached to an exterior wall. Or you could try the look with stars printed on outdoor throw pillows or all-weather rugs or hang a star pendant light over your deck or patio.

  1. Curvy seating
Rounded, wavy chairs and couches are part of the “futuristic forms” trend that the team at Wayfair Professional has put together for 2024. For your outdoor living space, this might translate to curved rattan settees or loungers and a round table to match.

Houzz also identified this design look with its furniture trends for 2024, which include curvy overstuffed couches, round dining tables, and ribbing on pieces like side tables that look like a stack of inner tubes. Use these silhouettes outside, too, in fabrics that can withstand the elements.

Carolina Hurricanes

Hurricanes happy with early returns on Guentzel, Kuznetsov: ‘It’s pretty electric’

Playing their third game in four days, and after a long flight back from Las Vegas, the Carolina Hurricanes did all they needed to Monday in a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Goalie Spencer Martin, starting a second straight game, continued his feel-good story with another win in his first game at PNC Arena. Sebastian Aho scored his 20th goal, making it eight straight seasons with 20 or more in what has been a consistently good career. Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who had not scored since Dec. 19, found the net for the first time in 23 games and was all smiles in the locker room, his relief apparent. Martin Necas matched Aho with a goal and assist, and the Canes (33-17-5) also got goals from Michael Bunting, Brent Burns and Jordan Martinook — Burns on a power play. Seth Jarvis had a pair of assists as 13 players had points. “Tonight was really good because I thought for two periods we played really well,” Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I was worried about how we were going to start, with the long travel. But I thought we did a real nice job.”

Panthers’ free-agency grades: Adding playmaking WR, 2 big guards steps in right direction

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We are getting into a fun time on the sports calendar when NFL free agency flows into March Madness, which overlaps with baseball’s Opening Day, which starts even earlier this year because a couple of NL West teams are playing this week in Seoul, South Korea.

But it’s not like we’re completely finished with free agency yet, though most teams have completed their heavy lifting. That includes the Carolina Panthers and the new leadership troika of Dan Morgan, Dave Canales and Brandt Tilis, who jumped into the fray last week like they were getting paid by the transaction.
They’re not quite done, either. While they wait on word from veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who’s been known to take his time with such decisions, the Panthers will host a pair of wide receivers early this week — Mike Williams and Michael Gallup, both of whom are dynamic wideouts when healthy, which hasn’t always been the case.

So while the final grade could look different depending on what Clowney decides and whether the Panthers give Bryce Young another playmaker, The Athletic rolls out its report card on the Panthers’ first wave of free agency.

(Contract information via Over the Cap and/or The Athletic sources and published reports.)
